Why Funny T-Shirts Will Never Be As Funny A Spoken Joke

By Matthew Cann

I am sure you like to think of yourself as a bit of a jokester, right? You make your friends laugh sometimes, and you have enjoyed your moment in the spotlight when it comes to entertaining your personal circle of comrades. Well, even if it is just on a subconscious level, you've decided to buy some funny tshirts on the Internet and up the comedy ante. When your shirts arrive, you are bubbling with excitement at what your friends are going to think when you wear one of these tees to the bar tonight.

Tonight is the night that you plan on getting some serious laughs. You have found one of the greatest funny tee shirts you have ever seen, bought it, and are currently wearing it across your chest like some sort of breastplate made of cotton and comedy. You are going to make your friends double over with laughter and strangers buy you booze...and let's not forget about how the girls are going to swarm all over you. What's a more perfect ice breaker than funny tees?

You open the door to the old pub with a flourish, stride in, and expect to be worshipped like a deity come to earth. That doesn't actually happen, so you decide to be patient and let the outrageous laughter happen organically. You see your friends, get the meet-and-greet of the night over with, and settle down for some good conversation...which you're certain will focus mainly on how funny your funny t-shirt is. A few drinks go by, and while you get a few laughs from your chums through conversation, people are still completely ignoring the comedy gold on your shirt.

It may have something to do with the drinks you've been throwing down, but you're starting to feel a bit concerned about the funny t shirts situation. To be honest, it's gone way past the issue of clothing and edged closer toward what is beginning to become a social crisis. You keep wondering if you ever even were funny to begin with. Are your friends just politely laughing at your jokes and then making fun of you secretly? If this were the 2nd grade, you would throw your shirt on the ground and run away crying. You'd also get in trouble for being drunk, so it's a good thing this isn't 2nd grade.

Well, I wouldn't worry too much about your friends not appreciating your choice of funny tees. Funny t-shirts are completely subjective. There is no human connection between a shirt and a person, so the person observing the shirt is the one who must immerse themselves in the concept of the joke all alone. Humor is subjective, and what one person thinks is hilarious, another person may dismiss completely. You will always be funnier than the print on some t-shirt, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't keep buying them! You may get one that everyone connects to, so experiment and try to stick to humor that is grounded in the movies, music, and interests of those you most care about.
