Student of the Year; Karan Johar's next to be the shortest film directed by him

By Rohini Nadia

Model-turned-actor Siddharth Malhotra has been grabbing a lot of attention lately with his first on-screen appearance, Student of the Year, scheduled to release on the 19th of October 2012. Starring in Karan Johar's upcoming film along with Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan, Malhotra who has had no previous experience in movies has been said to have found acting difficult, while his peers, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan, both come from strong backgrounds in the film industry. Quoting Siddharth, "

The only disadvantage in being from outside is doing filmy things. I'm not so dramatic and not comfortable doing over-the-top things. When you look at Shah Rukh Khan, it's not what he sings on screen, but how he sings too. He sings (lip-syncs) with so much passion and love. This was a challenge at least for me."

Karan Johar spent above Rs. 40 crore for his next venture, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, which stars Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukherjee and Preity Zinta. Using the towering skyscrapers of Manhattan as a setting for this movie, Karan Johar managed to grab the attention of audiences in India and abroad, with the film raking in more than Rs. 110 crore at the box office and that's certainly not all. For the Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol-starrer My Name Is Khan, Karan Johar chipped in an estimated Rs. 38 crore, while the film won 10 FilmFare Awards and 7 Star Screen Awards amongst others.

This is also the first time Karan Johar is directing a movie, which does not star Shahrukh Khan in the lead. However, the news of Shahrukh Khan doing a cameo has been doing the rounds, exciting people around the country. Shahrukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment banner has also lent a hand in the film's production along with Karan Johar's Dharma Productions.

As per general knowledge, a shorter film is bound to rake in higher collections, with a shorter run-time allowing for more screenings in multiplexes in a day. Also, the modern-day movie-watcher is known to prefer shorter films. In all, Karan Johar seems sure of his upcoming release, which has also been crowned as one of the most anticipated films of the year. Student Of The Year is scheduled to release on the 19th of October and will have model-turned-actor Siddharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt (Director Mahesh Bhatt's daughter) and Varun Dhawan (Director David Dhawan's son) playing the roles of three students participating in a school competition.
