6 of the Best Musical Instruments for Youngsters

By Ruth Williams

It is well documented that encouraging a child's creativity has numerous benefits to their development. However, it can be a challenge to get them to take up a musical instrument when there is the TV and video games to contend with. If your child does happen to be interested in learning to play a musical instrument, which are the best ones to start with?

In most cases, children will be introduced to music at school and given the chance to play a musical instrument. Here, we look at six of the best musical instruments for children of all ages:

1. The Violin

The violin is a classic and most children will be given the chance to play this string instrument during their early school days. The beauty of the violin is that it comes in a variety of sizes so is perfect for a range of age groups. The little one can also manage to carry the instrument itself.

2. Percussion Instruments / Drums

Sure, they might be a little loud and quite large, but drums are a great musical instrument for kids. Children love playing the drums so this is a sure way to get them interested in music. If you don't have the room for a full kit, you can buy individual and hand-held drums. This also means the outlay is less.

3. Piano

The piano is an excellent way for your child to get creative and practice a new skill. The beauty of this instrument is that it can be played on its own or as part of a group. There is an alternative if you don't have the space or money for a piano. A keyboard is a good place to start learning on. This is recommended until you know your child is intent on keeping up with the commitment of playing.

4. Guitar

For those kids who want to be super cool the guitar is probably their first choice of instrument. This is not necessarily the easiest musical instrument to learn to play and will require a great deal of perseverance. If your child wants to learn to play the guitar, it is best to start it off with a small acoustic version.

5. The Flute

In schools, the flute is also a popular musical instrument for children to learn to play. Being small and easy to maintain, this instrument is good for children to play. Getting the hang of the technique will take some commitment, as with the guitar. Despite this, it is a convenient choice and a great option for many young beginners.

6. Learn the Trumpet

For those children who want to be noticed, playing the trumpet will certainly do that. You'd be mistaken for thinking that the trumpet is only used in orchestras, as it is also widely used in modern day songs. This instrument requires a good lung capacity and the strength to blow it and get a note, so it is probably best for slightly older children.

It is well worth spending time encouraging your child to participate in musical activities as it is very beneficial to their development. They learn to be responsible, committed, determined, and creative. They learn to value their own belongings, and will really grow in self-esteem. So, with nothing to lose what are you waiting for? Start you search for a musical instrument for your child, to hire or buy.
