Kinds Of Nail Salon Ventilation Systems

By Leigh Bean

Beauty shops are required to install their own nail salon ventilation systems. The purpose of these circulators are to effectively remove contaminants that can pose grave health risks and discomfort to clients and workers alike. Shops provide the relaxation and pampering that clients are expecting to get from going into the shop by removing the contaminants produced from the products.

Aside from vapors, products that include polishes, tip glues for extensions, and quick drying sprays can produce harmful vapors and bacteria. Inhaling the circulating contaminants could result to irritation of the nose, throat, eyes, and the skin. A person exposed to these contaminants can also experience headaches, dizziness, nausea, inability for concentration, fatigue, and other effects because of the chemical pollutants that have entered the bloodstream.

To maintain the health of shop workers, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has formulated guidelines that nail salon ventilation systems should be in place in every shop. The guidelines were updated in March 2007. It includes specific instructions on the circulation requirements on how to lessen the chances of workers in inhaling harmful chemicals.

Among the requirement is the putting up of of nail salon ventilation in work tables. An overall system should be placed to effectively collect hazardous fumes and dust. Another requirement is a process that can effectively keep up the quality aeration inside the store by exchanging stuffy air for fresher outdoor air in a regular basis.

The EPA guidelines further specified that every work table should have its own exhaust vent, a ceiling or wall-mounted nail salon ventilation placed above every work table. A combination of both is preferred for better circulation. These two kinds of circulators has its own advantages and disadvantages.

For spas working on a budget, the general circulation is the ideal choice. However, this is not an effective way to totally eliminate hazardous vapor, it only dilutes. This method is recommended for establishments or rooms that do not produce large volumes of vapors like schools and offices.

Since this process is similar to the HVAC already installed in most buildings, the beauty shop management need to make sure that their HVAC is functioning properly. The aeration of the store should also be independent from other adjacent businesses. This is to prevent spreading of toxic fumes.

The second kind, the local exhaust, is very effective in capturing and removing circulating pollutants before it can be breathed in by workers. It is usually placed at or near the source of the harmful fumes. Therefore, it not only dilutes the concentration of contaminants, but it can remove it totally to prevent it from circulating inside the shop. Local exhaust is the kind used in ventilated tables. It consists of a fan that extracts the chemical fumes into a duct. There are ventilated tables that are fitted with filters and has the capability to re-circulate clean aeration back into the salon.

Ideally, both local and general process is recommended for spas. But, due to economic reasons, shops are allowed to use general processes. They are just required to make sure that their nail salon ventilation systems are well-maintained and operating properly.
