When it comes to directing a heart-winning film, you can trust Karan Johar to get it right. The heir to Yash Johar's Dharma Productions, Karan Johar is currently acclaimed as one of the finest talents of contemporary Bollywood. After having rolled out blockbuster films including his first directorial venture Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Johar managed to strike gold yet again with a family drama, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham in 2001.
After tasting success, he later went on to direct Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna in 2006 and My Name is Khan (2010), a movie scripted around the prejudice faced by Indians in the United States after the World Trade Center attacks. Later this year, the fifth movie directed by Karan Johar will release, titled "Student of the Year", featuring Siddharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan. The film also stars Rishi Kapoor, Ronit Roy, Ram Kapoor and features special appearances by Karan Johar's close-friend and lucky mascot Shah Rukh Khan along with Kajol.
The film will be Karan Johar's first without his comrade Shah Rukh Khan in the lead. Recognized as the finest trainee assistant by Karan Johar, Siddharth Malhotra will be teamed up with director Mahesh Bhatt's daughter Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan, son of director David Dhawan. A Mumbai based model actor of Punjabi origin, Siddharth Malhotra is expected to be Bollywood's newest heartthrob. After having chosen modeling as a career at the early age of 16, Siddharth Malhotra has also previously worked as a VJ and assistant director for NDTV Goodtimes.
And this certainly isn't the first time Karan Johar has stepped away from his usual directorial role. Starting off as an assistant director, Johar has helped director Adtya Chopra in writing screenplay. He has selected costumes for Shah Rukh Khan for films like Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Duplicate (1998) and Mohabbatein (2000) amongst others. The director has also judged a talent show on Indian television, joining one of the contestants on stage to play the drums. Multi-talented with lots of potential, Karan Johar is expected to grab the spotlight with the upcoming Student of the Year.
Unlike his co-actors, Alia Bhatt the daughter of director Mahesh Bhatt and Varun Dhawan, director David Dhawan's son, Siddharth Malhotra has no previous acting experience and has worked hard to keep up with his peers. The actor is also looking forward to working in an action film in future; while rumors of yet another film by Karan Johar with Siddharth Malhotra have been surfacing. Malhotra's debut "Student of the Year" will release on the 19th of October 2012 and is one of the most anticipated movies of the year.
