Important Things Taught At A Screenplay Workshop

By Alison Wilcox

A screenplay workshop will teach a person very important things. Someone who wants to go into this business must do so with an open mind that is very creative. Going through this class is one way to get your work noticed by the very big talents in Hollywood.

Individuals must first learn that their script is only the first step in making a movie into reality. It is a blueprint for a project that has not been constructed yet. It is up to the producers in the industry to make your writings into a big budget movie which will take everyone by surprise. The instructors will teach each individual how to make their blueprint interesting to the entire world.

These writings have to be well read by the creator and others. There can be no mistakes or flaws in the dialogue or characters which are presented on paper. Take the time to view your work very carefully before sending it into any agency. Sometimes it is better to hire someone who can also review your work before mailing it away.

Having interesting and funny characters will always help a script fully. The story should be able to hold the attention span of anyone who enjoys going to the movies. Movies about real life people should also be interesting even though they focus on reality. This is why the producers of "The Kings Speech" hired Colin Firth to play the role of King George VI. He made this very boring person seem quite extraordinary. This is one movie which turned into a hit because of the actors great performance.

At times movie makers find that reality will win big at the box office. Fiction writing should be filled with fun characters who get into all kinds of madness. They should never be boring and it is better to write for your target audience. The class will teach people to write for the older generation as well as the youngsters.

Have the story relate to the appropriate audience and never make it too long. Research has shown that many people do not like to sit through a movie that is more than two hours long. Many individuals sometimes need a bathroom break after this amount of time and they do not enjoy it when they miss any of the movie. The writer must keep this fact in mind when writing his/her story.

Once again the only reason that people break this two hour rule is when they are writing about real life events or people. Hopefully when this happens the producers will cast an actor or actress who knows how to hold a persons attention for long periods of time.

When deciding to attend a screenplay workshop everyone should be prepared to write a script that is under a certain amount of pages. Usually the teacher will ask everyone to keep their text under one hundred and twenty pages. In this odd movie game producers will time the movie with the script.
