Understanding The Significance Of Turban Colors

Colors speak volumes and are associated with different memories, people, places, occasions and objects. They act as non-verbal communication in various aspects of our daily lives whether we are aware of this fact or not. The color choices for our clothing, cars, home and decor speak volumes about our personalities. Sometimes the influence of color can be louder than the spoken word. Similarly, turban colors have a certain meaning in the societies where individuals wear this piece of fabric.

Color is an important aspect of turbans in terms of what they represent and what they are used for. Although the meaning encoded in each color may be different among religions, they usually display the social cast of individuals wearing them. The various colors represent wealth, prosperity and specific events. The height of the turban is also a significant feature and carries a certain message.

Islam and Sikhism are the two main religions at the heart of the practice of wearing the turbans. It is usually a long and slim piece of fabric that is worn to cover the head. The wrapping of the dress is customary in numerous societies. It bears significance on the religious beliefs, customs and traditions of the wearer. It is a unique way of preserving ones culture.

There are many colors used in the design of these fabrics. Those that are commonly used include black, green, navy blue, white, orange and green. The specific type of fabric used determines the quality associated with it. Various materials and styles are applied to cater for the different tastes and preferences. This also helps to improve the affordability of the accessories. Common materials are silk, cotton, fine muslin and synthetics. Any style or fabric employed creates a unique and attractive piece.

The various religious leaders and scholars in Islamic countries are known to wear wraps that are white in color over a special cap. Individuals though to have directly descended from the lineage of Prophet Muhammad prefer to wear black wraps. Bright turbans are a common feature in joyful events such as marriages and are usually decorated with special materials. Dull and plain wraps commonly feature in solemn events including funerals

In these societies, wearing a turban is considered as a modest way of dressing. It portrays a number of values that are held in high regard in the society. It signifies devotion, self-respect and manhood. White and green turbans are believed to signify the color of paradise. They are worn during prayer sessions as part of keeping a religious belief that requires men to wear them during worship. There are those who believe that this act has an influence on the way in which their prayers are answered.

Orange and navy have significance in the Sikh community. They are worn on special commemorative events and on days of particular religious observance. A Pink fabric is worn while attending special occasions such as weddings, engagement ceremonies and other major events. Many people wear white turbans on a daily basis as part of their religious beliefs.

Generally, whichever design or color one chooses, the wrap is still acceptable in the society. The color worn by most individuals is determined by personal preference and most of them prefer matching them with the rest of their clothing. Although there may be favorite turban colors for selected events, there are no colors that are prohibited. The specific colors are as a result of common norms and popular preference.
