Fun Creating Stamps

By Heidi Arrowood

If you would like to try out your artistic side, then stamp making may be just right for you. You can create something that you will will enjoy and really love. Below are a few easy steps to help you create your very own unique stamp.

Designing the stamp

To get started, you need to ponder over some good ideals for your stamp. You should be thinking about what image or theme you want to go with. Play around a bit, drawing your ideals out on paper. Try to start out simple and get more complex as your skill increases. Some examples for easily created stamps might be trees, the sun, and so on.

Image tracing

After you have found a theme and you have drawn some images that you like, it's time to trace your image onto a piece of rubber. If you want to go for an alternative, then you should moisten your rubber. Then consider transferring the pencil drawing by pressing the rubber onto the drawing. However, keep in mind that this will also reverse the image for you. This means that you'll have to ensure the letters are in reverse.

Cutting

If this is your first stamp, try cutting the big pieces first. Then you can start cutting the very small detailed pieces. If you are cutting a circle or curve, keep your blade in one place. Then just move the rubber while keeping your blade still. When cutting large white areas, leave some of the rubber in place. This will break up any large white places and give a wood cut look. This will create a more interesting look overall.

Doing your first test run

Make sure to brush off the bits of rubber on your stamp. You don't want any little pieces of rubber stuck to the inked image. Next place your stamp on the ink pad. Make sure you get an even and full coat of ink. This being your first impression, you might have some areas void of ink. If this happens, just coat the stamp again.

Now you'll need to get a clean piece of white paper. Then push on the stamp firmly and evenly. After doing this, you'll have to carefully remove the stamp. Don't push down too hard though, because you may push it out and leave smudgy edges. Again, be very careful when you lift the stamp, because you want the cleanest possible image you can get.

The final result

At this point you have managed to create your very first art stamp. Just ensure all the edges are even and if you want to change something about it, encircle those bits and figure out carefully where on the stamp the changes will be made. Good luck!
