Designs For Tying A Turban

By Jennie Sandoval

The differences in tying a turban arise from the fact that it is used by people for different purposes. Women have their own style and so do men and children. Communities in different parts of the world use turbans for different purposes. This has brought about the styles that have emerged.

The basic principles must be maintained whenever turbans are tied. They include covering all the temples in the head and ensuring that the hair is fully covered as well. Ear lobes are also supposed to be covered fully regardless of the design you adopt. This means that the cloth should be of appropriate length.

Gurus are said to have gifted the turban to their followers making it sacred attire. A person who has wrapped it around the head is said to be crowned in Kaurs and Singhs. This is a throne where commitment to a higher consciousness sits. It is also a symbol of submission and readiness to serve all people in the world.

You will wrap the cloth as many times as the length allows. You will need to wrap it several times to achieve the triangular pointed shape at the front. This style has been varied by thickness and height but has remained the same at the basic level. White is the most common color but other colors are also available. Color can be used for religious or aesthetic significance.

The entry of designers and professionals has made tying turbans more of an art than a religious act. It is an attempt to recreate the image of this cloth by allowing the younger generation to contribute. They will be more willing to put it on if they participate in setting it up. The attire has suffered an image crisis with the emergence of terrorism. Professionals have showcased it on international arena and allowed a change of perspective. This is how it found its way into runways and fashion shops.

It is easier to begin by holding one end with your mouth and passing the cloth above the head towards the back. You should then turn it to the front and begin to wrap it around the head from right to the left. Cover the ears fully with as many rounds as possible depending on the length. This is where you adopt your preferred design.

Several advantages are associated with having the cloth on your head. The fact that it holds your head tightly gives you the power to concentrate. This is one of the teachings of guru. You will have the extraordinary powers to identify self centered individuals when they come close to you. They may cause you to lose your grace.

Hair is important in achieving the triangular pointed shape with turbans. Long hair acts as support for the cloth by adopting a pony tail which makes the sharp pointed shape possible. The cloth is also used to hold the hair together since members of the community are not supposed to trim it.

The art of tying a turban needs to focus on new designs as well as traditional principles. Professionalization has not taken away the fundamental principles of this act. The entry of professionals has allowed people to view the attire in a different light. Basic principles have to be adhered to regardless of the design.
