Thriving Philadelphia Art Galleries

By Helen Georgette

Visitors who believe that Philadelphia's art scene climaxes with Robert Indiana's Love sculpture and the Rocky statue will be thrilled to grasp that the City of Brotherly Love is teeming with art destinations. American history could be prominent in most people's minds when thinking about Philly, but the culture and art that flows thru the city is equally as wonderful as Independence Hall or the Liberty Bell. A vibrant local artistic community prospers in the city of Philadelphia and the huge number of Philadelphia art galleries available makes their work available to enjoy

First Friday in Philly

Seeded across the city - from the outdoor mosaics of Philadelphia's Magic Gardens on South State Street to the Picasso's hanging in the Museum of Art - there are galleries in Philadelphia that cater to tastes from eclectic to traditional and conventional. Lots of the galleries are located in the Old Town district and are open for viewing in the popular "First Friday".

Slingluff Gallery

Situated in Fishtown and owned by Jonathon Slingluff and his spouse Leigh, the couple offer monthly exhibitions that may range all the way from local street art to modern art from around the globe. This is proving to be one of the more popular Philadelphia art galleries because of the revolving exhibits that appeal to introductory art fans as well as those with a rather more practiced eye.

Locks Gallery

Located in a stately 3-story building in Philly's Washington Square, Locks Gallery enjoys a name as amongst the most prominent art galleries in Philadelphia. Using its influence in international art circles, Locks Gallery has helped raise the profile of one or two local artists including Jane Irish and Edna Andrade.

The Clay Studio

Part of the Old Town gallery district, The Clay Studio was started to give new artists a place to work, create and display their art. It has now turned into the best spot in Philadelphia to see and purchase unique arts. With the gallery and store, The Clay Studio also offers classes for those that want to develop their own art.

Schmidt-Dean

For over 25 years Christopher Schmidt has been exhibiting his art and that of others from his Chestnut Street gallery. A former "Best of Philly" winner, Schmidt exhibits a large range of work includingsculpture, photography and painting, generally by local artists.

Biello Martin Studio

Michael Biello and Dan Martin, along with architectural designer Carlo Fiammenghi have joined together to bring one of the most eclectic art spaces in the country to Philadelphia. This Old Town studio/gallery evokes the salon atmosphere of Europe, where works of all mediums are on display.
