Satellite Television Review - Is Directv Or Dish Network Number One?

By Brian Stevens

At first both main satellite television companies - Dish Network and Directv - look pretty similar. But if you take a close look you'll find that there are significant differences. Here is what they are..

Program Options

DIRECTV has got 265 satellite television channels, while DISH Network has got 320 channels. Dish Network has got 320 program channels, DirecTV has 265 television channels. The satellite channels with both companies include a great diversity of categories which includes movies, TV news, sports, variety shows, network programming, weather, reality shows, special interest programs and foreign programming.

DIRECTV prices begin at $29.99 a month for 150 channels, which includes local television channels - ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, and The CW channel. Program prices for Dish Network start at $24.95 for 190 television channels including your local channels including NBC, CBS, FOX, plus ABC.

DIRECTV And DISH Network Movies Services

The two providers offer you 31 movie channels from HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, and also Starz. Movie channel prices start at $13 per month for Showtime, Cinemax, and Starz, and $16 for HBO.

Streaming Video Service

Streaming videos are the latest technological advance in satellite TV programming. With streaming video service you can watch movies and TV shows on your TV, your computer, your cell phone, and your laptop. Dish Network offers access to more than 25,000 streaming videos, while DirecTV offers more than 10,000 streaming video.

Pay-Per-View Service

Pay-per-view service lets you view the most recent motion pictures in the comfort of your own home without the need to go to a video store in order to rent them. DIRECTV offers 60 motion pictures per month, plus sports plus special attractions, with prices starting at $3.99 per movie. DISH Network features 75 movies a month, along with sports plus special attractions, with fees beginning at $3.99 per movie.

Satellite Radio Plus Music Services

With DIRECTV you can get 9 Sonic Tap music channels and 56 XM satellite radio channels. With DISH Network you can get 64 SiriusXM satellite radio stations as well as 52 music channels. All of the radio and music channels from both providers are broadcast in digital audio which gives you a clear, vibrant sound, and programs are commercial free.

DIRECTV and DISH Network Equipment

DIRECTV will give you a free 4-room satellite TV system, including installation, once you order one of their program packages. DISH Network provides a free 6-room satellite television system along with free installation when you purchase one of their program packages. You will have a choice of receiving a free high-definition receiver from either provider, so that you can watch your TV programs in high definition, or a free DVR receiver so you can record your TV shows. Additionally you can get a HD/DVR receiver.

DIRECTV and DISH Network Support Services

Both DIRECTV and DIRECTV feature totally free customer support via phone, email, plus online chat service 24 hours a day 7 days a week, so you can receive help when you need it.

Bottom Line

When it comes to equipment, DIRECTV and DISH Network's dishes and receivers are similar in quality and design. Nonetheless, I've found DISH Network's remote control and their program guide to be more simple to use when compared with DIRECTV's.

With regards to programming, DIRECTV delivers the most sport shows, which includes the well-known NFL Sunday Ticket, while DISH Network provides the most movies, music, foreign programs, as well as pay-per-view movies.

With DIRECTV you get 160 high-def channels. With DISH Network you receive 200 high-def channels.

If you would like the best variety, the most high-def programming, and the most pay-per-view movies and events for the very best price, then DISH Network will be the smartest choice. If you want to receive the most sports programs, such as NFL Sunday Ticket, I recommend going with DIRECTV.
