Fourty Seven - Funny Halloween Costumes: Leaving Them Laughing

By Jaden Aidan

Funny Halloween costumes are often the characters we remember long after the holiday. The keep us laughing and stretch our imagination. The unexpected appearance of a simple keyword when frightful and terrifying is what we expect increases the laugh factor. There's no limit to the possibilities for humorous outfits as you can pull ideas from popular culture, from the internet or from old time cartoons. For a different slant you might opt for satire or present the other side of a political issue in a way that is hilarious.

Avoid costumes for characters that have been done the same old way year after year. It may be difficult to find the perfect concept but once you do you will be able to develop a funny costume that is original and make it your own. Almost anything can be viewed in a humorous way so take a topic or character and look for the funny side.

A woman dressed as Barbara Walters or Sarah Palin is the same old thing. A man cross dressed and exaggerating the speech or characteristic mannerisms of either woman could be hilarious. Perhaps a man dressed as Palin carrying a huge tube of lipstick looking for pigs? It's best to poke fun without being mean spirited with your costume. Keep it light hearted to keep it funny.

You don't have to use people as your characters. You can use wildlife, pets, inanimate objects - whatever strikes your fancy. Interplaying characters with your partner or spouse is a great idea. Imagine a husband cross dressed as a maid accompanied by his wife in a cat suit dressed up as a princess or rich woman. Any cat owner knows our cats think we are staff. A costume that looks like a book might have the title as ""The Story of My Life"" and be covered with rejection slips. A cucumber might be campaigning to become a Vlasic dill pickle. There's no limit to what the imagination can find when you let it fly.

Even if you hate them, clichs and famous sayings can be incorporated into a costume. There was the famous "I've fallen and I can't get up" commercial that was a popular source for humors years ago. Even this has been incorporated into humorous outfits. Tetris pieces are another popular one, go as your favorite shape!

The only caution when using funny Halloween costumes is to keep practicality and comfort in mind. It is so easy to be carried away with an idea and build on it and add to it - and then find you've created a costume that won't fit through the door or doesn't allow you to sit down to rest. If a Halloween party is your destination it might not be polite to wear a costume so wide you take up half the room. Consider your comfort and the comfort of those around you and keep your costume within reasonable boundaries when it comes to size.

Humor has dark sides you might decide to use. Sarcasm or mocking of popular characters can be hilarious when viewed by the right audience. If you will be in public avoid words that might be offensive to people, don't wear a funny Halloween costume that mocks or derides any group of people. If your costume includes a full mask that hides your identify understand some stores will not allow you enter until the face covering is removed. This is security policy in many malls and businesses. If you are headed for a private party your costume should be one that won't offend other invited guests. If in doubt, ask the host or hostess for their opinion. Signs with strong language or funny costumes with sexual innuendoes won't be suitable for places where children are expected.

Most funny Halloween costumes can be made using items around your home. With an eye to being creative, come with a few possible concepts and look around to see what you might use for those costumes. Keep it as simple as you can and create a funny costume without expending too many hours or dollars. Keep your mind open to possibilities and remember gender identities don't apply to the fantasy of Halloween. Keep it simple and imaginative and play to the laughter in your funny Halloween costume.
