Celebrating The Yuletide Season Together With Cancer Afflicted Children

By Alaric Sowerby

Within the few years that I've enjoyed, there's one particular experience that has left a lasting lesson in my life. This was the time when I had Christmas with the children that got cancer.

Many individuals should agree with me that Christmas is best liked by children. I remember a verse in the Scriptures which says, "Then Jesus called for the children and said to the disciples, "Let the children come to me. Don't stop them. For the kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children." I guess that Jesus may really want people to be happy, particularly the kids, during His birthday.

On the other hand, not all the kids are rather happy on Christmas day. There happen to be those that are caught up in a certain war. There are likewise those who don't have their family with them and then there are those that are ill. Among the various kinds of health conditions worldwide, cancer is amongst the most difficult diseases for a child to endure. It hinders children to play, to go to school, to enjoy a normal life and in some cases it prevents kids to live.

The moment I had the opportunity to enjoy Christmas with these kids who are suffering from cancer, it affected my view about life as a whole. Many people may think that a dying or very sick kid won't enjoy Christmas. However, this wasn't the picture I found among these kids. They essentially enjoy Christmas just like they weren't ill. It seems as though, Christmas day itself was a present to treasure much more than costly toys, personalised Christmas cards or great tasting food. This has made me consider that maybe this was exactly why Jesus liked young children. This was because kids could see more than suffering. It was because children can live life regardless of how complicated everything is. This was simply because children don't stop celebrating Jesus' birthday regardless of how complicated life becomes.

People today get angry on a lot of things. We feel low whenever our expenditures tend to be more than our earnings or perhaps when our boss doesn't choose the business Christmas cards layout that we created or if the traffic is quite heavy. All these are just small things compared to what a child that has cancer has to go through everyday.

Spending Christmas with all these kids has not just taught me the very best Christmas gift that was gifted to us but also the way we should live our everyday life. Our everyday lives could be full of difficulties but we need to remain strong and live our lives the way it ought to be lived.
