A Variety Of Black History Books

By Charlotte McBride

Any bookstore around will have a variety of black history books to read. Young people of color who want to learn about their ancestors and leaders of the past will be sure to locate these items. They are informative as well as educational to all races around. These novels will also give a positive spin when it comes to people of color.

"The Autobiography of Malcolm X" is one story that anyone would enjoy reading. This tells the story of a man who fought for the rights of his people and how many others tried to stop his freedom fights. He was a man who appeared to be very angry at times during the 1960's when African Americans were being treated very poorly by white people.

"The Help" is a great story that chronicles the life of a twenty one year old white woman who was friends with her maid. There is another black woman who is also involved in the novel and she is someone who is bold and usually speaks her mind to others. The three women have a unique friendship that goes further than that of employer and domestic. In some regards the black woman was almost like a mother to the younger white woman.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Was a man who died while fighting for the rights of other individuals. The story "Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." tells about his life and struggles. He was determined to have people live in peace.

This story is a tribute to such a great man who was a part of the ever famous bus boycott in Alabama and a whole series of peaceful demonstrations. He was a great person who tried to show people that we should all live in harmony despite our racial and cultural differences.

A lady who will go down in history as a great writer is of course Harriet Beecher Stowe. She was the mastermind behind the great story "Uncle Tom's Cabin". The story was very controversial for its time and many people refused to read it. It had many anti-slavery sentiments within its pages but in the end many literary people consider it to be a sensational novel.

A shy little girl named Ruby Bridges made history when she became the first African American student to attend an all white school. Her story can be read in "The Ruby Bridges Story". This was one tough little lady who faced bullies and racism each and everyday while going to this school. It is a great novel to read since it confronts people about unnecessary hatred.

Harriet Tubman appeared in one of the best black history books of all time. "Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom" is a well written novel that will surely grab any reader's attention. She was a woman who created the underground railroad that led other African Americans to freedom. This was also a woman who was constantly abused as a child by her slave master and his family. She is on the same level as another famous figure from the bible. Her and Moses faced the same obstacles and were both winners in the end.
