A Great Art Gallery Will Provide Much Beauty

By Bernard Miner

Nola Zirin started out on her career in contemporary art by studying print-making. Her works of hyper realism have been exhibited in many places, including the Library of Congress and the Mark Gallery. Zirin uses a combination of materials including spray enamel, oil paints and hand-cut stencils to create layered dark surfaces which she then scrapes away to reveal luminous undertones. The finished picture has a photographic feel, which in her own words, stimulates both the senses and the intellect. This statement could almost exemplify the purpose of the art gallery.

Contemporary art galleries are generally privately owned establishments. They are often located close together in urban centres, such as the Chelsea district of New York. These galleries are usually open to the viewing public without charge. The owners make profits by taking a commission (typically twenty-five to fifty percent) from pieces that they sell on the artists' behalf.

Frederica Rossi also has works on show. Her method has developed from the use of acrylic and oil paints to incorporate clay, sand and glue direct onto canvas. This physical aspect makes the abstract even more emotive. Rossi's works have been seen in solo and group exhibitions in her native Italy and abroad.

An on-line gallery is a website displaying works of art. It is run as a business by promoting art to potential buyers. On-line galleries are sometimes known as on-line secondary markets.

These widely divergent concepts are all part of the contemporary art scene. Without an art house, they would remain obscure. Privately owned art houses bring modern art to the wider audience, normally at no cost to the audience.

The cosmopolitan world of the art gallery, publishing house and art dealer is becoming more international and commercial today than ever before. The business of contemporary art is a very competitive market, but there are possibilities of large profits. This is why good galleries will pay a stipend to ensure the artist can survive until the day that his or her brand of art is suddenly noticed by collectors. An art house cultivates collectors, does public relations on the artists' behalf and encourages critics to publish reviews.

America Martin is a fine artist inspired by the human form. Her command of line and colour make impish references to indigenous and classical art forms, and her philosophy is that inspiration exists, but it has to find the individual working. There is possibly no better art gallery in which to see such ideas expressed in oils, mixed-media, sculpture and photography than the Mark Gallery of Englewood, New Jersey. Fine art representing the works of international artists are decorously displayed in these tasteful surroundings. Enjoying an afternoon at an art house is a great way to appreciate the way others view life.
