Who Is A Keynote Speaker?

By Anthony West

The underlying message of a conference or occasion holds the hearts and spirits of all people gathered together until the next meeting. That message is best crystallized by the keynote speaker. Organizers are therefore purposeful in their search for the person. There are expectations that the organizer and audience have which such a person must meet.

Having been given the mandate to address the gathering, how should you prepare and deliver your speech? You begin by knowing the mission of your client. Each audience and organization is different. Discuss with your client and identify the purpose of the gathering. As you prepare, consider the possibility of change. Understand the dynamics that could change the audience or format for the meeting on the night before you make your address.

There are different types of speakers in every convention. Some are instructional. Others are motivational while others entertainers, etc. Before signing the contract, identify your role in the convention. It is this expectation that will enable you to prepare the right materials. Without a primary purpose for your address, you will fatally fall short of their expectations.

Organizers slot speakers depending on their aim for invitation. You may be required to address the gathering at the beginning of a conference. This calls for a speech that sets the mood, pace and agenda for the conference. Speakers invited in the middle are supposed to energize the crowd and refocus the debate. If your slot is at the end, your responsibility is to crystallize all that has been discussed and provide a clarion call that will keep the group together till the next meeting.

It is of paramount importance that all guest speakers connect with their audience. This is achieved when you understand the purpose of that gathering. Be aware of the unique challenges facing them on daily basis and point at possible solutions. Your mood should resonate with that of your audience to keep them glued to the message. Find punch lines as well as points of release and tension that will map your speech.

Each audience and timing is different. As such, customize your speech to the audience depending on their situation and composition. You should appear to speak personally to the lowest as well as the highest ranking individual in the gathering. Remember their tragedies and triumphs as though you are one of them. Refer to their history and address their aspirations. This is the way to speak to their hearts.

Organizers saw something in you that led to your appointment as the guest speaker. This uniqueness must be brought out in your speech. The uniqueness fits the theme, the audience, the year, month, date and time of day in such a way that no one else can. Maintain your element and raise your listeners to a level that will forever be remembered.

Time and pacing are of essence for every speaker. The longest duration you are supposed to take 45minutes. It also should not be less than 30minutes. Find a style that is characteristic of you, the organization and your audience. Make the presentation flawless ensuring that you punch occasionally to maintain attention.
