Important Facts About New York IRP Registration

By Joseph King

The United States Border with Canada is rich with a network of roads that cross borders. This means that the roads pass though different jurisdictions that have different regulations and rules governing transport systems. The network is important because it enhances and facilitates trade and transport of goods and people. This makes it necessary to come up with an agreement that governs transport in these areas. It aims at avoiding disagreements and making trade easy. The office in Albany does all New York IRP registration.

International Registration Plan is an agreement between most of the states found in continental United States, District of Columbia plus all Canadian provinces. It allows registration of any commercial vehicles, which travel to more than two of these jurisdictions. This agreement is put in place to help ease commercial transport and control power squabbles. Albany, NY has a customer care counter that handles all the relevant issues.

A person wishing to incorporate their vehicle in this agreement must pay a fee. This is done in one of the jurisdictions. They are then issued with certificates proving membership, apportionment plates as well as cab cards. These can be used anywhere within the member areas. Cab cards list all the places that the vehicles can operate. All monies paid are shared within all the relevant jurisdictions through a system of apportionment. They are divided according to the percentage of total fleet miles that trucks operate in each place.

All commercial trucks have qualified for registration done at the Albany, NY office. These are hired to carry goods and people. They must be operating in different jurisdictions that fall in the agreement. Power units also are included provided they carry weight in pounds more than twenty six thousand or have a number of axels.

If the owner decides not to have their truck registered, they must pay for trip permits. However, there are a number of vehicles that are exempted. These include government owned cars, trailers, city pickups, chartered buses and recreational cars.

The requirements needed for registration are equal to those demanded by the state. Proof of ownership, personal identity and insurance must be presented. It is possible to do this through mail as well as going to the office in Albany, NY. All mails should be sent to this office.

The truck owner is usually notified about the expiration date in advance. Renewals require a fee payment to go through and complete. It should be done early to give it enough time for processing before the current one expires. This allows the truck to stay in business through the year. Again, renewals can be processed through mail.

It is also possible to transfer registration as well as apportioned plates from one truck on to another. This is allowed because one can purchase or acquire a new commercial truck that plies the same route as their old one. All this can easily be done at the main office.
