Tips For Winning A Portland Photo Contest

By Alyce Powell

Having the opportunity to enter a Portland photo contest can be fun and give you the chance to make a bit of cash or enjoy a unique prize. Frequently, those who enter photo contests have very little, if any experience in taking pictures for a competition but, that makes things even more interesting, as you never know what people will come up with.

You do not necessarily need an expensive camera to snap a great picture, you just need an object or person you are interested in taking pictures of and a bit of patients to get just the right snap shot. A simple camera can help you create just a lovely of a picture as a more expensive one and a simple camera can allow a novice photographer the change to focus solely on the picture itself rather than the fancy details of the camera.

Before you enter into the competition, be sure that you have taken your time and read all the details regarding the competition and what is expected of you as a competitor. Some sponsors may choose to limit not only the size but, the topic when you enter their competition so, do be sure you actually qualify before you begin.

While you will not always notice a fee with every competition, there may be a cost that is associated with entering the event. The fee can range from very low to a bit more expensive. You will probably notice, sponsor that ask for a higher fee will often offer their winners a bigger or more unique prize.

Once you've determined that you can be a part of the event and you have registered with any necessary fees, then you can turn your attention to what it is that you have decided you would like to use as your inspiration for your picture. Once you have picked out an item or a person, the next thing you will want to consider is the location of the picture. Whether you get a small amount of light or a lot is likely going to play a big part in whether or not your picture comes out clearly in the end.

If you choose to make the topic of your picture a person, allow them to act naturally and encourage them to be themselves as much as possible while you take the pictures. Letting your subject be his or her self during a photo shoot can allow the picture to turn out much more naturally and unique.

For most people, the biggest challenge comes at the end when it is time to choose the picture to be entered into the competition, especially if there are some that are very much alike. If possible, ask a friend or family member to help you choose. When choosing, always go with the one that catches your attention first.

If at the end of a Portland photo contest, you learn you are not the winner, do not be discouraged. When the opportunity arises again, try again. Often competitions of this nature depend on the taste of the judges judging the pictures. Just because you did not win the first one, does not mean you did not do a fabulous job and you would not win another. Most importantly, have fun.
