A Historical Tale From Monuments Men Book

By Sonya Riley

The Monuments Men book was written by author Robert M. Edsel along with other of his non fictional works like Rescuing Da Vinci and Saving Italy. In the past years, Robert Edsel becomes interested in art and architecture and what better way to show this is through writing a beautiful story. After learning the secrets of these unsung heroes, his published book caught the attention of many readers.

As the published work of Edsel have grown interest among readers, a movie version for this is intended to be released later in December. The film is starred by veteran and winning actors like Matt Damon, John Goodman and Bill Murray. The other good part about this film is that the director is George Clooney.

During the World War II, the Nazis took control of most parts of Europe which resulted in damaged structures and items that were considered historical treasures. Because of this, the US Military made a division which was called as the Monuments, Fine Arts and Architecture. This movement was formed by groups of people from different backgrounds such as historians, curators, artists and the like.

The book of Edsel really becomes an eye opener for the public since the characters and the setting of the story is similar from the truth. After reading this, people could have more knowledge on the incidents that have happened during the war. Moreover, they get to learn the importance of protecting and preserving culture and art pieces.

These monuments men are definitely heroes in their own way as they have acquired tons of these artifacts which are stolen by the ruler Hitler. This process may not be easy at all since they have undergone a lot of struggles just to get them back. Moreover, this quest eventually became one of the greatest treasure hunts known in history.

The effects of the war brought about different experiences from the people who have lived in those times. As more structures were damaged, so as the dreams and hopes of the people who have encountered this tragic event. Every person has his or her own tale of how the war has affected their lives in many ways.

Through the works of the MFAA and their exceptional men and women, history was saved from the ruins of the war. They could have just hidden underground but instead they took the challenge no matter how hard it is. Their impact in society would definitely make people like us today very grateful for saving the painting of Mona Lisa or the sculpture of David.

What is even more amazing is that the Monuments Men Foundation was formulated in honor of their service to art preservation. More importantly, this organization is in honor of those brave souls who fought hard to won over such historical artifacts. The mission did not actually end as more treasures are still left to be discovered.

The Monuments Men book is indeed a great masterpiece of Robert Edsel knowing that he is able to unlock the secrets of the past. On the other hand, there still thousands of those treasures that are either ruined or lost brought by the war. And this signals the beginning of a new quest to search for them in the coming years.
