Ways Space MMO Culture Works

By Pamela A. Go

Space MMO games are increasing in popularity together with many other massively multiplayer online role playing games and have started to create their own unique culture. Just subscription fees that gaming studios earn for their MMORPG games, not to mention sales and ad revenue, makes this genre a real money maker for the industry. One of the unique challenges that online games present to developers is that the gaming environment must stay active and fresh 24 hours a day in order to support players who are logging on in a variety of countries. Since these games are very different from console based RPG's that are made just for one player, a culture has developed online with its own terminology related to MMORPG's.

Space MMO games are constantly getting updated by their designers so that there is fresh content for players to enjoy and the game never becomes boring. In order to adjust game play and force players to reconsider their approach to their favorite MMORPG, designers often send out updates that buff or Nerf specific in-game character classes. If a character class is bettered and fresh skills are given to it that could give that class considerable advantages over others, it is said to have been buffed. If a character's skills have been nerved, though, you can expect unhappy players since some of the advantages they once had in the game have now been removed.

Most space MMO games utilize a leveling system to help you track your progress through the game and gauge your character's abilities against those of other players. You can move your character to a higher level through a practice called grinding, which is basically the act of defeating one enemy after another until you reach a desired level. Almost all online role playing games demand that players invest a bit of time into grinding their character if they hope to reach the highest levels, also known as endgame levels.

The core element of online games is their social features, such as in game chat systems that let players talk to one another as they play. The chat system is a place where gaming culture can clearly be seen since there are always abbreviated ways of discussing items, quests, and other in-game topics.

Space MMO games are so well-liked that they have literally developed their own culture. When you begin playing an MMORPG, you might be surprised by how quickly you become a part of the culture, too.
