Some Famous Photographers In NYC

New York City and Paris are two of the greatest Meccas for photography. New York City is the home of hip and often dark street photography and some of the world's important and most famous photographers in NYC and the history of the medium. These include, Diane Arbus, Joel Meyerowitz, William Klein, Garry Winogrand, Nan Goldin and Steven Klein.

Diane Arbus was born in New York City in 1923 and tragically committed suicide in 1971. She is possibly the most important female photographer of her generation. Arbus was primarily involved in photographing societies outsiders, using black and white film and the square format of the Hasselblad camera. She focused on people who were marginalised such as dwarves, giants, transgender people, nudists and circus performers. She used to refer to her subjects as "aristocrats", who had already passed their test in life.

Nan Goldin is one the most famous female photographers in the world. She is known for her hard-hitting grunge style. She began photographing the emerging punk scene in New york during the 1970s before documenting the lives of the gay communities of the Bowery area of New York. She was personally involves with her subjects and her snap-shot aesthetic created some dark and disturbing images. Her most famous work titled "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency" has been highly influential in photography, film-making, music and many other mediums.

New York based photographer William Klein is renowned for his unusual photographic techniques in his photojournalism and fashion photography. He rose to fame as a fashion photographer for vogue magazine and as a documentary photographer who produced photo-essays on American cities. His ironic style featured motion blur and natural lighting that often broke conventional photographic rules.

Diane Arbus is quite possibly the most important female photographer of all time. She used a 6x6 Hasselblad camera to capture people on the margins of society. She photographed giants, dwarves, circus performers, identical twins and trans-gender people, all of which she referred to as "aristocrats". She believed that her subjects had already passed their test in life, and she provide insight into areas of life that most people tend to avoid.

Nan Goldin relocated to New York in the 1970s where she began photography the emerging punk scene in the city. She also made highly successful photographs of the gay subculture of the Bowery area. She was personality involved with the people she photographed and her snap-shop aesthetic created dark and gritty images that have been highly influential. Her most famous work is called The Ballad of Sexual Dependency which is still a hugely successful exhibition and photo-book.

Steven Klein is a New York based fashion photographer who produced high-profile advertising photographs during the 1980s. He has worked with some of the biggest names in fashion, including Vogue, ID and Arena. He is most well known for his editorial photographs of Madonna, Brad Pit and Tom Ford. His work is highly conceptual with models dressed in strange clothes posing in an unusual way.

There are many other famous photographers in NYC and contemporary new York photographers are heavily influenced by these important photographers. These photographers moved the medium into new directions and created some of the world's most iconic images.
