The Evolution Of Local Hip Hop

By Tammie Caldwell

Hip Hop is one of the coolest genres of music. It consists of rhythmic sound with lyrical rhymes. This is the category that rap falls under. Under this, there are also other subcultures that came. Breakdance is influenced by the beat of this kind of tune. Those who live down South of Florida are into it. As a matter of fact, everything about this culture started there.

The instruments used are turntables and percussion. Later on, beatboxing was discovered, which is done entirely from the mouth of a person. This alone can accompany the chanting or rapping of a rapper or even a song. The latest beats these days are taken from synthesizers. One example is dubstep. Local hip hop Fort Lauderdale, FL is one of the places any urban music lover can go to.

Rap falls under this category but this genre is not generally about rap. It can be accompanied and mixed with other music genres like Rhythm and Blues, pop, and even rock. There are also other varieties of this subculture. You can find that DJing is also very interesting, It is not necessary that the artist has to sing or rap. He or she can also be a break dancer, a graffiti artist, or a scratcher.

This culture is very rich and any tourist who can come south will have fun in local clubs and bars playing this genre. Even on the streets, you can find kids practicing breakdance routines. This originated from the creativity of the African American culture.

In combining this with other music genres, like Rhythm and Blues, it is incorporated with a chorus in between chanted verses. The songs are very phenomenal because of the theme being used. They are very youthful as well. Some of them are using old songs and do remixes. For some, when you talk about remix, it will not be complete without rap.

In the early two thousands, rap was merged with rock and metal music. Thus, the sub genre called rap metal became phenomenal during the era. The evolution of this urban music is double edged since it created both negative and positive friction in the music industry.

The rise of Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and Eminem has branded the genre as somewhat the music that gives bad influence to the youth. With blunt profanities in the lyrics of songs and misdemeanors in public, these artists are being banned by parents in the playlist of their children. But these never go unheard as they are being played in radio stations without strict compliance to censorship.

Eminem, Kanye West, and Lil Wayne are some of the big names of hip hop today. They express themselves in limitless ways. They choose sensitive topics like politics, sex, drugs, and alcoholism. But they are really big in the industry and are making high radio plays. Even if during airplays the cursing are deleted or censored, the audience can still buy explicit albums and uncensored files that can be downloaded in a matter of seconds.

The reaction to the music, its lyrics and the behavior of artists will differ from one person to another. It is very difficult to assume that this person is either negatively or positively influenced by the music. There are differences in psychological and social orientation which could affect them differently and at various depths.
