Home Security Solutions That Work

By Kenny Marcum

Most people want to feel safe and secure when in their homes. Unfortunately, break-ins occur on a daily basis no neighborhood is exempt. Home security solutions include installing burglar alarms to alert a monitoring company if the door's locks have been breeched.

Most systems can be operated in the armed position for additional safety or unarmed when one is awake and alert. When armed, the system is monitoring the doors and windows of a house. To arm or disarm the system, the occupant enters a PIN number on the keypad. Usually there is a one to two minute delay after opening a door to enter the PIN.

Trigger mechanisms are attached to the windows and doors of a house. When they are opened, the trigger sends a signal. In businesses, another level of protection is added by including motion detectors or light beams. When someone breaks the light beam, the alarm sends a warning. However, since occupants are often in the house and may be moving about, these features are not as useful.

Most systems use a subscription service with a monitoring company. Personnel at the company contact authorities if the system goes off. These alerts may be sent through phone lines or the internet as well as other methods. Most units also sound off a loud alert at the house that will continue until disarmed. This sound serves two purposes: alerting occupants and scaring away criminals.

Units are generally reliable. Some offer a battery backup so they continue working even with a power failure. Since older units depended on a phone line, burglars often would cut phone wires. Newer systems use cellular or radio transmitters to eliminate this problem.

If you are concerned about your safety inside your house, home security solutions can help. These systems can be configured to meet your particular needs. They reduce the chance of intruders stealing items or harming occupants of a house.
