The Benefits Of Head Turbans

By Freda Watts

Men have worn head turbans for thousands of years. They are more common in parts of Asia of than anywhere else but can also be found in Africa. Nobleman usually wear them but sometimes women do too, after shaving their hair off. Many religious people wear them, this is especially true of Muslims and Sikhs.

Turbans are worn by Sikhs as an acknowledgement of their god. They wear them to stop dirt getting in their hair too. Jews, Catholics and Hindus occasionally wear them when they have entered church. Sikhs though, always wear turbans because their belief is that God is omnipotent. Sikhs also wear them to make themselves stand out among other people in their community. They don't wear anything over their bears because they can be kept clean without difficulty.

The hear gear was worn originally to denote someone's higher class in society. It separated them from the people of the lower classes. These days, all Sikhs wear them because they want to banish class distinctions. Every Sikh was named Singh or Kaur, as part of this effort to make everyone seem to be from the same class.

The color of the turban doesn't matter. Blue tends to be most popular with youngsters but the elderly usually wear white. Green and red are generally disliked. The reason for the head covering is to offer the hair protection, so the color really isn't important, it's up to each individual to decide which color he wants.

Sikhs believe their hair was a gift from God, so they never cut it. They want to live the way God originally created them and show respect. Cutting their would go against that. Some believe that if you never cut your hair then it will keep on growing. Sikhs say that the hair, beard and eyebrows stop growing after a while because the body regulates it's hair growth.

Keep your long can be good for your health too. It can protect against the sun's ultra violet rays, helping to prevent skin cancer. It can also keep you cool during the Summer and warm during the Winter. It insulates air between head and hair.

Turbans have been worn in many European countries for hundreds of years. However, they have never really become very popular. In the United Kingdom, they are worn mainly as a fashion statement rather because of any particular faith. It is more common to wear hats in Europe.

People who have been through a course of chemotherapy often wear turbans to cover baldness. Chemotherapy usually results in loss of hair. Men tend to find baldness more acceptable than women, so head covering is more common among females. Cancer sufferers also wear caps, hats and night scarves.

Head turbans can be controversial. The soccer authorities in Quebec banned anybody from wearing them during matches due to safety issues. However, the governing football authority repealed the ban but said that if you wanted to wear one then it must be the same colour as your football shirt. This is because sometimes the colour can clash with the shirt of the opposing team and make it difficult to referee the match.
