Time Saving Music Production Techniques

By Frank Lubsey

Speed and efficiency are extremely important when producing music. Have you ever had a great idea in your head but were not in the position to record that idea in your studio because maybe you were away? By the time you get home, the idea is lost. Even when you are right in front of your keyboard with a great idea, if you spend too much time fiddling around, you can quickly lose inspiration. This article will introduce you to some time saving tips so that you can fully take advantage of inspiration when it strikes.

Templates: After beat making for a while, you'll probably develop a suite of sounds and settings that you really like for your track. Create a template for your vsts and sound settings in your DAW. Some DAWs allow you to do this explicitly, or, you can just create a project in your DAW, load your instruments and settings, and then save it with a file name of your choice.

Custom Drum Kits: One of the most time consuming parts of the production process is the selection of drum sounds that complement each other. One way to save time is to take the time to build custom drum kits of drum sounds that complement each other such as hi-hat, snare, and kick. When it comes time to make a new track, you can simply load up a drum kit in order to save time.

Categorizing: Another time-saving idea is to group all of your sounds at your disposal into recognizable categories. Some virtual instruments already do this, and most hardware instruments are grouped into banks. However, many vsts do not do this. Also, many drum sounds are broken down into top-level drum categories such as "snare" and "kick", but not into specific categories such as "rimshot" and "sustained kick". The goal of categorization is to find the exact sound you are looking for when you need it.

Versioning: Another time saving technique is what I call versioning. If you have a beat that you like and you feel the sounds in your beat really complement each other, make a similar sounding beat that uses the same instruments. In other words, make another version of the beat. How similar the version of the beat is to the original song is up to you. You can make it very similar, or you can have completely different musical phrases and rhythms but use the same instruments. The idea is that it cuts down time because you are already using instruments that you know complement each other so it saves you some production time.

These are just a few quick tips to help improve your production speed. Incorporate some of these ideas into your workflow, and you will be on path to becoming a faster producer.
