Spray Paint Art is the technique of creating amazing pictures by manipulating paint on posterboard. Paintings can also be performed on other mediums such as car bonnets and motorbike fuel tanks to quote two examples, but in general you'll see artists creating masterpieces on paper.
In Mexico in the 1970's a group of street artists founded a new type of art work which allowed them to make money from their skills. By producing spray paintings for the passing tourist trade they could supplement their other income with live displays, creating paintings to order for purchase.
Even though Spray Painting originated on the streets, the advent of the internet has now brought this art to the masses. Before, if you wanted to see artists performing their works, you'd have had to visit a tourist spot where they gathered each night. Now, thanks to file sharing websites you can watch many of the artists online and even learn the art for yourself. You simply require spray cans, paper and random objects from your home that can be used to manipulate the paint.
The beauty of the art form is often in the reveal, with a multitude of colours going down on the paper haphazardly, only to produce something beautiful once the templates are placed and removed.
You choose the basic colours for the scene and spray them down onto the posterboard, generally starting with the lighter colours. Then you remove layers of paint to your satisfaction using newspaper or magazine sheets. You can do this in a variety of ways, experimenting is all part of the fun.
Bowls, cups, sauces, saucepan lids and plates make superb stencils for planets and the edge of newspaper pages make for convincing pyramids. Once you progress with your skills you can cut out unique templates from pieces of card, this enables you to include almost anything in your paintings.
If you're just starting out in spray painting you might find planets and pyramids are good subject matter. These are very popular items with which to make up scenes, because not only do they look good, they're also easy to create.
Spectacular planets and mystical pyramids are what draw the crowds in and this in turn is what helps the artist make more sales. People are not used to seeing these unreal picture types and this other worldly feeling attracts tourists to the display. Artists who expand their horizons into other topics often stand out more, especially online where you'll find thousands of space art pictures, but relatively few portraits of other subjects.
Nature themes are also very popular and they allow the painting of different things, waterfalls, trees, rocks and creatures. When you get into this kind of detail it's imperative that you've acquired good free hand skills, as templates are often too tricky to create for some creatures.
You're going to need spray painting supplies if you want to take up this pastime, but don't worry, none of the items are expensive and many won't cost you any money at all. Spray cans cost less than five pounds online and newspaper or magazine sheets should be readily available in your house for free. Then you just need some old stencils, plates and pan lids will do to start with.
If you get good enough you can even sell your artwork either on the streets or via a website and you can use YouTube or other file sharing websites to exhibit your pictures for free!
