Six Things To Remember When Making Felted Vessels

By Lelia Hall

If a person decides to do felting for any kind of artistic endeavors, there is some preparation that needs to be done. This includes the making of felted vessels where sometimes wet felting is used. There are other types of felting techniques like needle felting among others. The following are six tips to keep in mind when using any type of felting technique.

It is important not to rush the experience. Felting is a process that takes time and if a person tries to hurry because they do not have time, things might not turn out the way they want it to. It is best to set aside a day or several hours where that period of time can be totally devoted to making this type of art.

In addition to having enough time to work, one should also clear the space they want to use to do their craft. This is especially true when using a method called wet felting. This method uses lots of water and some liquid soap to help the wool fasten together. Having too many things on a working space can create accidents and spills on things that one might not want to get wet.

The right type of resist is also important in creating vessels made of felt. Resists are flat or three dimensional objects that are used to create felted shapes without seams. This is one of the materials that are used in making wool bowls and other 3D objects. On the other hand, this all depends on what one decides to create.

Also, having all of the right materials for the project at hand is a good idea so that everything can go as smoothly as possible. This means having all the supplies needed for using the wet technique or the needle technique of felting. This includes materials needed for the type of vessel that one wants to make and the colors to be used.

Since one will be working for a significant period of time, it is good to make sure that the surroundings are comfortable. This means having good lighting in the room whether it is day or night and making sure the temperature is at a comfortable setting. Playing good music is also good if it is relaxing and helps one to focus.

The type of accessory one wears should also be taken into consideration when doing felting work. There are certain types of jewelry that can get in the way by snagging fabric and certain types of plastic that may be used. In this case these accessories should be removed to prevent any accidents from taking place. One can also wear an apron to protect their clothing if necessary.

One of the most important things to keep in mind is not to have great expectations. Sometimes a piece of art might not turn out as planned even if you have done everything in the right way. Artwork can be very unpredictable in its results and it is important to keep an open mind because sometimes a mistake might turn out to be something new and original.
