Art Colleges & The Best Character Designs

By Bob Oliver

When designing video games, it goes without saying that several elements will come into effect. Out of all of these, which one is the strongest? To me, it's the creation of characters but it's easy to overlook what is needed in order to make them as appealing as possible. What are some of the most important steps to consider as far as creating game characters is concerned? Art colleges can teach you a tremendous amount. Here are 3 ways that you can make these personalities in video games shine.

1. Have a rudimentary idea of who your character is supposed to be before you decide to give them an identity. The gender of the character is essential, which goes without saying. However, is your character going to be the kind of person you'll root for until the end or someone who you are looking to pursue in order to see yourself to the end credits? While these concepts may seem plain on the surface, you will be surprised by how they will come together in order to make the best possible game.

2. What kind of game are you trying to create as far as aesthetics are concerned? This is a point that art colleges around the world will be able to bring to your attention as well but you have to consider who the audience is for your particular type of game, too. Typically, a game that has a grittier look is going to appeal more to an older audience than anything else. By comparison, a game sporting warmer colors is one that might appeal to a wider number of audiences.

3. There is a level of comfort to consider when it comes to the various art styles seen in games. You want to be able to bring the world that you have in mind to life and it's clear that the style you want to incorporate has to be one that you're comfortable using. Let's say that you're not the designer who wants to put more realistic visuals to use, since you either aren't learned in this regard or do not possess the necessary technology. Instead, try to incorporate a style that is closer to manga, thereby implementing more uniqueness as opposed to realism.

Video games are going to be created based on a number of factors and these are just a couple worth noting. Certain art colleges, as well as other areas, can help you in this regard; this means that your dream career will be that much more obtainable. I am sure that most would agree that computers are required more than any other "canvas," so being artistic as well as tech-savvy is integral. These pieces of technology are used to fully render games, so do not forget that there is more to this process than creativity.
