How Fifty Shades Got Its Acclaim

By Michelle Acton

It involves a half century and the colour that comes second to goldthe not-so-critically acclaimed Fifty Shades of Grey craze currently sweeping women and bookshelves everywhere has been at worst one of the biggest fads of modern times and at best groundbreaking. It's broken countless records and surpassed many milestones, cementing itself firmly as one of the bestsellers of all time - we take a look at this king among novels, the effect it's had and why.

There's no disputing the fact that the unique story line and themes that run throughout the novel have captivated audiences in a way like no other. It's interesting therefore to look at these and attempt to analyse just why it's been so universally popular and what the effects have been.

So, that enticing storyline! It's a love story, but a love story that's quite simply like no other. The leading lady is fairly innocent and innocuous; it's how she's seduced by her leading man that forms the basis for this mind-melting extravaganza - enter Christian Grey. He's a wealthy businessman, intelligent, sharp and calculating He enters into an intimate relationship with Anastasia however one devoid of all emotion and governed by contracts with clauses such as no eye contact. The intimate scenes are the most infamous and they've broken down a barrier into sex previously unknowingly existent in our society.

As discussed above this book has had an enormous affect on human minds everywhere. One of the main effects culturally is an opening up of society who appear far less inhibitive when discussion their private lives and fantasies. Perhaps this then - is where the magic lies, in lifting the taboo previously placed on sex.

The effect on women in particular has been huge and there has been a colossal surge in not only sales of the book but also sales of erotic toys, especially for females. Classic UK providers such as Ann Summers, Bondara, Love Honey and ohtique have all seen an increase in demand and also willingness to be adventurous from customers with sales of the more advanced toys in particular going through the roof. Talking about the book has lifted some semblance of the taboo that being adventurous in an intimate occasion has in broader society too, making talking about ones private life with their partner far more common and not just a topic for evening drinks out with the girls.

It's an interesting thought to ponder whether the considerable effects of this book on society and attitudes everywhere are positive or negative. The overwhelming opinion and evidence though, fortunately seems to point to the former. Businesses in the erotic toy industry are booming online and societally there is a sense of freedom and openness when talking about intimate relationships. Perhaps this book isn't the best written, but it's certainly one of the best received.

This book igniting worldwide change isn't the first of its kind although it may be in the world of literature. Other torch carriers for change to have occurred throughout history include the suffragist and suffragette movements and also Nelson Mandella, the force responsible for the end of apartheid. The Fifty Shades of Grey novel is far less serious in nature however it has instigated a change in modern attitudes.
