Ellipses should always be observed while drawing diagrams that have a cylindrical appearance. An experienced artist is able to identify a good drawing from a poor one through checking for smooth corners on a cylindrical image. Ellipses should be oval shaped at its corners not pointed from whichever angle an image is being drawn from.
