Relating Egyptian History And The Old Testament

By Claudine Hodges

Many scholars believe that the Bible is actually not a reliable source for historical claims because it does not match with Egyptian history. The scholars would actually claim that they cannot seem to find any Biblical character in the sequence of events of the Egyptians. What they failed to notice is that the stories matching Egyptian history and the old testament have to be interpreted correctly in order for them to be visible.

Now if one would look at the traditional set of events that happened in ancient Egypt, he would find that these facts were all written by different historians. Some of them to name were of course Manetho, Josephus, and Herodotus. However, by tracing back some of their works, one would find that most of these historians would actually have a lot of disagreements with each other when it comes to the actual set of events.

So to start off, one would first have to begin by knowing about Noah and how he was related to Egypt. Now one thing to take note of is that Noah had a grandson whose name was Mizraim who was indeed the father of Egypt as according to Egyptian historian Eusebius. According to Eusebius, Mizraim, also known as Mestraim, was indeed the founder of the Egyptians when the tribes had spread out after the fall of the tower of Babel.

Some chapters in Genesis as well as Exodus would talk about the visit of Abraham into the land of Egypt. It was during the time after Abraham made a covenant with the Lord that he traveled with his wife to the land of Egypt because there was a big plague in Canaan. This was around 1875 BC and at that time the Pharaoh of the land was Khufu.

During the reign of Khufu, the pyramids that he built were not perfect in shape and in size. This was simply because the Egyptians during that time did not that have complete knowledge of arithmetic and advanced mathematics. Abraham was a part of the Chaldean race which is a race known for their knowledge and skills in arithmetic.

So relating this to the visit of Abraham, one will be able to notice that the pyramids of Egypt had actually become more symmetrical and perfectly squared after the visit. This would imply that Abraham taught the people of Khufu the art of mathematics and geometry. This is proof that the events that happened in the story of Abraham actually matches the events during the reign of Khufu.

Of course one cannot ignore the existence of Moses. Although most people doubt he is real, he actually fits into the timeline of the 12th dynasty Pharaoh Amenemhet III. This Pharaoh had two daughters in which one of the was the foster mother of a Pharaoh that was to become the successor which was actually none other than the Biblical character Moses.

So with all of these accounts, it is actually not advisable to brush off the Bible as a source of history. During that time, the dates may have been different which means that there could have been a mistake in making the timeline. So far the Bible has been quite accurate in stating accounts.
