Safety Vests For Visibility And Protection

By Ina Hunt

Safety first is a main requirement for many different types of workers and volunteers. Using safety vests is one of the most inexpensive and effective means of staying injury free during many specific jobs which involve high traffic, lighting issues and heavy machinery. Purchasing these for employees will keep insurance premiums down and employees on the job.

In June 1999, the requirements and standards of this feature were put in place by the International Safety Equipment Association. The specifics of wearing the garment were laid out for various jobs, scenarios and situations.

The helpful article makes volunteers and employees much more visible to other staff, high traffic and moving machinery. The added reflective bands can help give extra visibility during bright days and dark nights when visibility is impaired or nonexistent. Workers can also be easily identified as those in charge or assisting - for example, crowd control workers at a concert will be easily recognized by the attendees as someone in authority. School patrols will be obeyed much quicker and more easily if they wear an identifying vest.

Workers who need these safety garments include airport personnel, traffic control employees, road workers, school patrols, construction employees, warehouse workers, security guards and traffic management individuals. It is also wise for individuals who travel often to keep one of these in the trunk or storage area of their vehicles in case of engine trouble, a flat tire, or an emergency which requires traffic control after an incident or accident.

Yellow and orange are the most common colors that are used in these articles. Blue and red garments are also available for high visibility. The articles are made of a flame-resistant, very lightweight material that is easy and comfortable to wear. Inscriptions, company names and logos can be added to help identify different groups when more than one business or organization is wearing them in the same location.

Other styles with the same protective qualities can be found. The most common of these is the tee shirt style which allows high visibility when the individuals wearing them turn to the side. Bands of this same protective fabric can be added to wheeled equipment, strollers and other items which require high visibility.

These protective articles can be purchased at hardware, uniform and building supply stores. They can also be found online at various industrial equipment sites. Choose the fit and style that best suits the usage and the person who is wearing it. Always keep extras on hand in case more employees are added to the project or the work is more dangerous for others than first perceived.

Just the knowledge that employees or family members are wearing these items will give managers and families assurance and great peace of mind. The individuals will be much more visible to oncoming or hidden traffic, other people, and will also help identify them as a group with a specific mission or duty.
