Hints For Hosting A Houston Caricature Artist For Your Special Event

By Sharon Cook

For people who love to entertain, there is nothing better than coming up with new ways to surprise and delight guests. If you are planning a special event, you probably have already made arrangements for the clowns, band, or disc jockey. Since these are performers guests have come to expect, you could do something unexpected like hiring a Houston caricature artist to create memorable portraits your guests can take home with them.

There are some simple steps you can take to maximize everybody's enjoyment, including that of the portraitist. These suggestions come from long experience of the artists themselves. You need to put the drawing station somewhere out of the sun, if your party is being held outside. It gets hot during summer afternoons, and guests will swelter and complain if they are forced to sit with the sun beating down on their heads.

Caricature artists need to get to know something about their subjects. The success of the portrait depends on capturing the essence of the person portrayed. To do so, artists frequently engage their subjects in conversation to get a sense of their personalities. They tell jokes and create distractions to put people at ease. This is almost impossible to do if you put them next to the DJ or band.

Your guests won't want to spend half the party standing in line, so you need to come up with a plan to keep the portraitist busy and everybody entertained. When you are hosting a small gathering, passing out portrait line numbers will work. For larger gatherings, you can have a small line behind the artist waiting on their turn in the chair.

Good caricature artists keep up with the most popular celebrities, action heroes, and sports teams, so when customers ask to have them included in a picture, the artist can accommodate them. If you know some of your guests are going to request a special costume or sports mascot to be included in their portrait, having a copy of it on hand will be a big help to the portraitist. The final result will be much more satisfying if the drawer has a reference point.

It is especially important when you are holding your event outside to remember to bring the portraitist refreshments regularly. They may not be interested in the food, but they will need liquid refreshers to prevent dry mouth and dehydration. Any other refreshments in the portrait area can be a distraction and problem though.

To make sure you don't blow the budget, you need to know beforehand what the caricature drawer is going to charge. It probably isn't as much as you anticipated. Most charge anywhere from seventy-five dollars to a hundred twenty-five dollars per hour. The price will go up if you have specific requirements.

Good hosts are people who love to see guests enjoying themselves. Planning parties and events is something they look forward to. Finding unusual and entertaining ways to make a party special is the mark of a great host.
