Top Locations For Wildlife Photography Santa Fe NM

By Dennis Baker

One of the toughest challenges photographers face is finding the right location to film in. If you are ever in New Mexico, this should not be a problem. The following are some places you should consider for wildlife photography Santa Fe NM.

Upon arriving in the town, the first important attraction you will notice is the Loretto Chapel. It only lies a couple of blocks away from the Plaza. Its lush history cuts across decades. Despite the impressive history it has with a similar cathedral in Paris, it is surprisingly small in size.

The main attraction within the building is the Miraculous Staircase. Legends abound of how it was placed in its position. An interesting observation is that there are no nails or glues that hold it in place. Furthermore, you will not see any support system preventing it from tumbling from its 20 foot height.

For photographers looking primarily for wildlife, the best location to be in is the Santa Fe Ski Basin. This gem lies only a short distance from town. With a simple looking yet significantly challenging terrain, it attracts tons of adventurists each year.

Getting an excellent shot of the surroundings requires perfect timing. You need to actively monitor the position of the sun so that you will know the correct time to shoot. For the perfect shot, ensure the sun is not obstructing your view. The best filming time is in the evening from 5PM. Not only will the light be better positioned, but most of the nocturnal animals will have come out as well.

Another location full of plant and animal life is Ghost Ranch. It lies about 1 hour northwest of Santa Fe. The beauty within it is just hard not to notice. On any given day, you should at least spot a coyote and a western diamondback. Ensure you film in a safe manner so as not to get bitten.

Originally, the ranch owners had planned to make the ranch a haven for relaxation and conferencing. Georgia OKeeffe, a massively successful artist, spent her developmental days in it. A number of her most famous pieces may have actually been thought of in the ranch. You can easily tell this from her famous landscape paintings.

Tourists always purpose to visit the Tent Rocks. This natural formation lies an hour west of the town. There is a Mars like feeling that comes with it. The rock formations resemble a scene from a science fiction film.

The rocks were formed due to volcanic activity that took place over 6 million years ago. There are plenty of monitor lizards that periodically duck in between them. Bald eagles also rule the skies and have their nests high up the cliff faces to safeguard their eggs from predators.

The Chama River completes the list. It runs through a pretty descent chunk of the state, providing much needed water to the plants and animals in its path. For a second, you might forget you are in the desert owing to the lush green vegetation dotting the river banks.
