Make An Old Craft More Interesting With Unique Knitting Patterns

By Donna Adams

Knitting has always been associated with old ladies like your granny, who would make rather boring items like bed socks or tea cozies. In recent years the craft has seen a revival among younger people, though, and this new generation of knitters has added a good dose of fun. In addition to instructions for stylish knitwear or those ugly seasonal sweaters grannies love to make, there are now unique knitting patterns for almost any item you can think of, even knit sandwiches.

The first project many knitters start with is making a scarf, which is easy and lets you practice while making something useful. To prevent yourself from getting bored, it helps to periodically change the color and texture of your yarn and make a striped scarf. For example, simply look at the way you are feeling and change the yarn to reflect the mood you're in. Alternatively, choose a bright blue for a sunny day and different shades of gray for various degrees of cloud cover and make a scarf that reflects the weather.

You can also turn the art of knitting into a game. It's a bit like those drinking games where you watch the presidential debate on TV and drink a shot of tequila every time a candidate says a certain phrase. The game for knitters involves changing the color of your yarn instead of drinking.

Yarn bombing, also called guerilla knitting, is a more extreme way for knitters to have fun. Basically you make knitwear for everyday objects. You can yarn bomb anything, from a mailbox to a tree or, like some guerilla knitters have done in the past, a city bus or a military tank. Alternatively, start small by making socks for tables and chairs to prevent their legs from damaging the floor.

There are millions of chic hat designs available but a silly hat will always bring smiles to the faces of everyone tired of the cold. Big bunny ears or a hat in the shape of a frog are always a good choice, as are fake braids or dreadlocks. Some knitters even make hats with fake beards that act as a mask to keep your face nice and warm.

If you love animals, you can use your skills with yarn and needles to benefit them too. Rescue animals often need to be kept warm and a sweater is a great way of doing just that. The sight of a penguin in a sweater will cheer up anybody who has had to deal with the aftermath of an oil spill.

Knit toys are a great way to bring joy to children's lives. A fluffy teddy is always popular but you can always let your imagination soar and create a knit octopus instead. A doll in the form of a zombie or a troll will also delight young and old alike.

The internet is a very useful resource for patterns, instructions and ideas. Over time your skills will improve so much that you will be able to come up with your own unique designs as well. Then a good dose of creativity is all you need to have endless fun with an age-old craft.
