These products have been produced from wood for a long time as tradition. Wood still stands as the main material but new ones are also being introduced and picking up pace too. There are properties and qualities that these new materials offer that wood cannot offer to the same level such as durability and beauty.

The products come in a wide range of colors. One can pick any color they want to match with a theme or decor in their home. Textures also vary with individual products. Gilding is a more common feature on older wooden products.

To protect pictures within a frame, acrylic glass or picture framing glass is used. Acrylate and Plexiglas are some of the examples of acrylic glass used. Panes are only useful if the artwork is not durable and can be damaged. Otherwise, they are not necessary. Panes protect artwork from damage making them durable, but they also keep them clean. Oil paintings are less covered by panes as are paper artworks.

Artworks that cost very expensively are the exceptions for which glass can be used on artwork made from paper. It is common practice to treat framing glass with anti-reflective coatings so that they become invisible under suitable lighting conditions. UV filtering properties may also be incorporated into framing glass if the room a piece of art is placed in is lit using UV light. UV light has properties that may be destructive to some papers.

The backs of frames need to be covered and the way that is done varies. Support is commonly provided by backing papers and foam-core boards. Backing materials also prevent duct and insects from reaching the artwork. Artworks can be severely ruined by insects and dust. Backing materials go at different prices ranging from free to very high for the high quality ones.

Most frames have a square or rectangular shape. However, some relatively other common shapes include oval and circles. The latter shapes are more of social event and family things. In commercial and public environments, rectangular and squire shapes are preferred. Scoop design is employed in pictures placed around corners.

There are many styles in which picture frames can be made in. The commonest and easiest to make is the L style. Another style still gaining popularity is the photo cube. Photo cubes accommodate multiple pictures besides having a special design. Pictures people put in photo cubes are normally taken from vacations, family moments, or timeline of happenings. Additional styles are digital photo frame, shadow boxes, clip frame, and box frame. The one that was invented last is the digital photo frame, which is from the twenty first century.
