Can Art School Students Get Involved In Photojournalism?

By Michael Robert Peterson

I am sure that you have a general idea of what exactly journalism entails. It's a subject that's rooted in the reporting of various news stories, each of them with their own hooks that make them appealing. However, photojournalism is done more so through visuals than text, which is why many photography enthusiasts ultimately find themselves becoming involved in this subject. No one can argue with the fact that photojournalism, when done well, can breed results.

For those who have the goal of becoming photojournalists, you must know that many points are worthy of your interest. The most important, from what I have seen, is a strong understanding of photography and the various assets it contains. You want to make sure that photos are taken well and that the proper angles and methods are used to accomplish this. For those who are set on being photojournalists, this is probably one of the better places to begin.

You must also know timing and when, exactly, certain events will unfold. The more that you become involved in photojournalism, the more you'll start to see just how important it is to time your shots. You must wait for the opportune moment and once it rises to the surface, that's when you must spring into action. If you can take part in this endeavor, it is unlikely that you will miss a shot that can make it into a reputable publication for the future.

If you're going to go into photojournalism with better care, it's important to know about focus as well. Every shot that you take must be crisp and this element does not come from your camera alone, even though it has power behind it. You must also know about how lighting and distance can help to make seemingly strong shots much weaker in practice. It's in your ability to measure the aforementioned elements and work around them that will make you a better photojournalist.

It's very possible to become involved in photojournalism and, more importantly, see success in it. From what I have seen, though, this success can only come about through the highest degree of work ethic that can be imagined. Men and women alike must possess a love for photography and all of the assets it encompasses. With that said, though, they must also know how stories can be told through visuals and how, exactly, they can be captured for that very purpose.
