Taking A Look At Comic Book Storage

By Janine Hughes

Anyone who collects comics you probably get excited when you find rare valuable books. Many people enjoy buying and keeping popular comics until the increase in value. To protect your collection it is important to practice proper comic book storage. Some collections may be valued at several thousand dollars so it is very important that you learn to properly store your collection.

Folks who are comic collectors take pride in their most popular and valuable books. These are the collectors who go to auctions and various trade shows to look for treasures. Those who own large collections will often display them at convention. Books that slightly worn and have been correctly stored will have a high value. Learning how to store books to ensure limited damage through the years is important.

The first thing a collector must have when storing comic books is an environment that is controlled. The storage space must remain at a constant temperature and not become too cold or hot. If your plan is to rent space for storage you need to make sure the facility has controlled temperatures. This will keep the books protected from moisture, mold, and mildew.

A basement or attic is an inappropriate storage place since the temperature can vary drastically. A closet in your home can be a suitable place to store your comic books because temperatures are often appropriate and there is no sunlight. Of course if you live in a climate that is hot, and you do not have air conditioning, you may not want to attempt storing your prized possessions in your home.

You may consider storing your collection as a display. It is best to store the books upright to keep them from bending which can warp the pages. Enclosing your comics in display sleeves will keep them from getting dusty. It is also a good idea to avoid storing too many books on one shelf because crowding damages them. If you choose not to display the books you should keep them in acid free boxes.

Specially made acid free boxes are designed specifically to store comics and are available in two sizes. The short sized box will accommodate 100 comic books while the larger box holds three times more. You can find the boxes by searching online which give you the opportunity to compare prices.

Storing your comics correctly may not be only for the sake of preserving their value. Properly preserving the books will ensure they remain readable. It may be your intention to pass the comics on to your children or grandchildren. Proper preservation will guarantee that they will increase in their value and be in good condition for future generations to enjoy.

Taking care of your books will ensure they are not damaged. It does not matter if you want to bring you collection to an auction or a trade show, or hand on to them for your personal enjoyment, storing them correctly is very important. Making sure that your collection holds its value and the pages maintains their readability is dependent on taking care to properly preserve them.
